Education AI Futures

Reimagining Learning with Local Intelligence

Building AI tutors, analytics, and assessment tools that respect our curricula, our languages, and our epistemic authority.

Education AI Futures is a research and innovation hub dedicated to designing, testing, and governing AI for education that is born of African realities rather than imported into them. We work at the intersection of machine learning, learning sciences, indigenous knowledge systems, and critical digital futures, asking a simple but disruptive question:

What happens when AI for education is designed from the ground up for our classrooms, our teachers, and our communities—rather than for someone else's?

Our work spans:

1

AI Tutors & Learning Companions

Aligned with Uganda's and the region's curricula, from early childhood to higher education and professional training.

2

Learning Analytics & Assessment

Competency-based assessment engines that understand local syllabi, exam cultures, and socio-economic realities.

3

Multilingual Education Technologies

Supporting English, Luganda, and other local languages, including sign languages and translanguaging practices.

4

Generative AI for Curriculum

Curriculum development and teacher support, governed by strong ethical, epistemic, and policy frameworks.

Futures Objects

We treat every model, dataset, and interface as a "futures object": a speculative artifact that encodes a particular vision of what learning in Africa could become. Rather than assuming that imported educational AI is neutral or universally applicable, we audit, adapt, and when necessary, resist such systems, and instead co-create local alternatives with teachers, learners, curriculum specialists, and communities.

Why this matters now

The rapid rise of large language models and generative AI has already transformed how learners search, write, and study. Universities and schools are struggling to respond: should they ban, regulate, or embrace these tools? At the same time, there is a new wave of data extractivism—where students' essays, teachers' materials, and institutional content are absorbed into foreign platforms.

Education AI Futures offers another path: digital sovereignty in education.

We advance a future where:

Curricula are mapped in our own knowledge graphs, not black-boxed in foreign servers.

Teacher expertise is amplified, not replaced, by AI.

Learners' data is governed locally and ethically, with clear consent and benefit-sharing.
